Why the sticker unit price can be misleading

A bulk pack's advertised unit price divides the pack price by everything in the pack — but if you won't use it all, that's not the price you actually paid per item used. The effective unit price divides the same pack price by only what you'll actually use.

Sticker unit price = Bulk price ÷ Pack quantity Effective unit price = Bulk price ÷ min(Expected use, Pack quantity) Wasted quantity = max(0, Pack quantity − Expected use)

A cheaper sticker price can still be a worse deal

A 6-pack priced at 4,500 (750 per unit on the label) looks like a bargain against a 1,000 single-item price. But if you'll only use 4 of the 6 before the rest goes to waste, the effective price is 4,500 ÷ 4 = 1,125 per unit actually used — 12.5% more expensive than just buying 4 individually at 1,000 each. The sticker unit price only tells the truth if you use the whole pack.

Pantry tip. Before buying in bulk, estimate honestly how much you'll use before it spoils, expires, or you simply move on to something else — an optimistic 'I'll definitely use it all' is the single most common way bulk buying ends up costing more, not less.

No. The sticker unit price of 750 won looks cheaper, but the effective price for the 4 you'll actually use is 4,500 ÷ 4 = 1,125 won each — more expensive than buying 4 individually at 1,000 won, because the other 2 are wasted money.

What if I end up using all 6 from that same pack?

Then there's no waste, and the effective unit price equals the sticker price of 750 won — clearly cheaper than the 1,000 won single-item price, so the bulk pack is worth it.

How much do I need to use for the bulk pack to just break even?

Break-even is where the effective unit price equals the single-item price: for the 4,500-won 6-pack against a 1,000-won single item, that's using 4,500 ÷ 1,000 = 4.5 units — at exactly 4.5 the two come out equal, and below it the bulk pack is the worse deal.

Does this account for reselling or storing leftovers?

No — it treats anything beyond your expected use as a full loss. If you can realistically resell, freeze, or share the leftover quantity, the real cost of waste is lower than what this calculator shows, so factor that in separately.
