Why heart rate right after the walk matters
The formula assumes you walked the full mile at a genuinely brisk, near-maximal pace — that's what the finish-line heart rate is measuring. Walking too slowly, or taking your pulse a minute late after it's settled, both push the estimate off; take heart rate within 10–15 seconds of crossing the finish.
What the score means
VO2max is measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). Higher values mean better cardiorespiratory fitness. Adult ranges vary widely by age and sex, but for reference, untrained adults often fall in the 25–40 range while trained endurance athletes commonly exceed 50–60.
Practical tip. Use a flat, measured 1-mile course (a track works well: 4 laps of a standard 400m track is close to 1 mile) and warm up beforehand — an unwarmed-up walk skews both your time and your heart rate.

Why does the same walk time give a different VO2max for men and women?
The formula adds a fixed +6.315 for male sex (vs. 0 for female) to account for average physiological differences in oxygen-carrying capacity — see the formula above. Everything else (age, weight, time, heart rate) is scored identically.
What happens if I enter 0 or a negative value?
The calculator shows "—" for any input of 0 or less, since age, weight, walk time, and heart rate must all be positive to produce a valid estimate. It also shows "—" when the inputs are positive but so far outside the tested range (a very slow walk, for example) that the formula returns a non-positive VO2max.
