Multiplying your step count by a height- and sex-based stride length gives walking distance. Dividing that distance by your pace's speed gives time, and multiplying time by the pace's MET value and your body weight gives calories burned.

Stride length drives distance
Taller people cover more ground per step. The estimate uses 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women as stride length — a 170cm man's stride is about 70.6cm, while a 160cm woman's is about 66.1cm. That's why the same step count covers a different distance depending on height.
Pace changes the time more than the calorie total
For a fixed distance, calories track MET ÷ speed: slow 3.0÷4 = 0.75, fast 4.3÷6 = 0.72, normal 3.5÷5 = 0.70 kcal per kg per kilometre. Walking faster raises MET but shortens the walk by about the same proportion, so the three paces land within roughly 7% of each other for the same distance — distance and body weight move the total far more than pace does. Per hour, though, a faster pace clearly burns more (MET 4.3 vs 3.0).

Why does stride length differ by sex?
The American Council on Exercise's steps-to-distance formula estimates average stride as 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women. Even at the same height, this slight difference carries through to the distance calculation.
Does a faster walking pace burn more calories?
For the same distance, barely — calories work out to MET ÷ speed × weight × distance, and the three paces are close: slow 3.0÷4 = 0.75, fast 4.3÷6 = 0.72, normal 3.5÷5 = 0.70 kcal per kg per kilometre. A faster pace mainly saves time. If you instead walk for a fixed amount of time, a faster pace does burn clearly more, because its MET is higher and you cover more ground.
