Ovulation & Fertile Window Calculator

Enter the first day of your last period and your average cycle length to estimate your ovulation date and fertile window.

Inputs
Estimated ovulation date
2026-09-09
Fertile window start
2026-09-04
Fertile window end
2026-09-10
A calendar-based estimate assuming a standard 14-day luteal phase. Actual ovulation varies by cycle and person — not a substitute for ovulation tests or medical advice, and not a method of contraception.

How the fertile window is calculated

This calendar method assumes ovulation happens 14 days before your next period starts, regardless of cycle length. The fertile window covers the days sperm can survive before ovulation plus the day after, when the egg is viable.

ovulation date = last period + (cycle length − 14) fertile window = ovulation date − 5 days to ovulation date + 1 day
  • last period — first day of your last menstrual period
  • cycle length — average days from one period's start to the next

More detail

Why 14 days before the next period

Unlike the pre-ovulation phase, the luteal phase (ovulation to next period) is consistently about 14 days across most cycle lengths. That's why ovulation date is calculated backward from the next expected period rather than forward from the last one — a 21-day cycle and a 35-day cycle differ mainly in how long it takes to reach ovulation, not in the luteal phase after it.

Why the fertile window starts before ovulation

Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while the egg is viable for roughly 24 hours after ovulation. That's why the fertile window in this calculator opens 5 days before the estimated ovulation date and closes the day after it.

Practical tip. This calendar method gets less reliable the more irregular your cycle is. If you're tracking for conception, pairing it with basal body temperature or an ovulation predictor kit gives a more precise read on the actual day.

Frequently asked questions

How is the ovulation date calculated?

Ovulation date = last period's start date + (average cycle length − 14), assuming a standard 14-day luteal phase between ovulation and the next period. For a 28-day cycle that puts ovulation 14 days after the period started (cycle day 15); for a 32-day cycle, 18 days after (cycle day 19).

Why does the fertile window start before the ovulation date?

Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, so intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in conception. The window above runs from 5 days before the estimated ovulation date through 1 day after it.

Does this work for irregular cycles?

It's less reliable the more your cycle length varies month to month, since the calculation relies on a single average cycle length. Track your actual cycle lengths over several months, or use it alongside an ovulation test for irregular cycles.

Can I use this as birth control?

No. This is a calendar-based estimate, not a validated contraceptive method — actual ovulation timing shifts with stress, illness, and normal cycle variation. Consult a healthcare provider for reliable contraception.
